The three-time premiership player came back to Bendigo to host a Born and Bred AFL skills clinic at St Therese's Football Club.
Selwood, who started his career with the club back during his primary school days, loved sharing his knowledge of the game with the next generation of footballers.
"To go back to St Therese's was really nice, especially seeing how much fun the kids have," he said.
"It was great to join in and show them some of the basic football skills, but it was even better to see how much the club had grown.
"They now have five teams with girls and boys within the sides and it's grown into a great organisation.
"I loved my time at St Therese's playing under-12s and have plenty of great memories."
St Therese's Football Club co-president David Stevenson said he'd never seen the kids so excited.
"They had a ball," he said.
"Joel was great and he really enjoyed coming back to the same school and footy club pathway he went down to get to where he is now.
"It was inspiring for the kids to see someone who started out where they are now and what the possibilities are for the future."
The visit was part of Red Energy's Born and Bred junior coaching clinics which reconnects some of AFL's best players back to where their careers started.
"Thanks to Red Energy we can celebrate one of our local heroes - who happens to be a three-time premiership player as well as a great role model for our club," Stevenson and fellow co-president Narelle Sherwood said.
