Aisha Neelam said the event was a way of being thankful and witnessing the blessings people had.
"And it's about celebrating together," she said.
The Strathdale Community Centre became a sea of delicious smells wafting from food tables as about 250 people gathered to share a meal for festivities connected to the end of Ramadan for what is known as Eid al-Fitr.
Fasting during the month of Ramadan is more than just about refraining from food from dawn until sunset.
"It's about abstaining from any action that would cause people harm," Dr Neelam said.
"You are trying to connect and empathise with those who are less fortunate than you are, at least on one level.
"But on a deeper level you are just trying to rise above your desires and connect with your higher self."
Many predominantly Muslim countries hold national holidays to coincide with Eid al-Fitr and people decorate homes with lanterns, twinkling lights or flowers.
