HEALTH authorities say over 50s with a history of most common blood clotting disorders can receive the COVID-19 vaccine, but should consult their doctor about their individual circumstances.

A Department of Health spokesperson said COVID-19 vaccination should be deferred in anyone with a history of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis and heparin induced thrombocytopenia.
They said anyone who experienced anaphylaxis after a previous dose of the same vaccine, or anaphylaxis in response to any component, should also defer their dose.

The spokesperson said the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation had not identified any other conditions which were contraindications to the AstaZeneca vaccine.
They said medical experts had advised the AstraZeneca vaccine was safe for over 50s with a heart condition.
The Advertiser has spoken to one Bendigo resident with a history of deep vein thrombosis, who was seeking official confirmation it was safe for her to receive the vaccine.
The Department said anyone over 50 should receive the AstraZeneca vaccine, as they had a higher risk of COVID-19 complications and a lower risk of blood clots.
