After scoring a comprehensive win over the Murray Bushrangers in round one last weekend, the Pioneers backed that effort up with a 12.12 (84) to 3.6 (24) win over the Gippsland Power at the QEO on Sunday.
The Pioneers have eight points and a percentage of 245.88 to be on top of the table - a position the club hasn't been in since 2001, where a team that included Nick Dal Santo, Rick Ladson, Adam and Troy Selwood qualified for the grand final.
"It was great to get a win today because we haven't won at the QEO for quite a while,'' Pioneers' coach Danny O'Bree said.
"The boys were really determined to put on a decent show for the home crowd. On the back of last week's win there was a bit of hype and some people wanted to come along and watch today to see how these kids have developed.
"To play a decent brand of footy at home was really pleasing for everyone."
Sunday's win was built around a strong defensive unit that kept the Power goalless for two quarters of footy.
Joseph Guiney and Cobi Maxted were superb in the backline and the Pioneers' midfield until worked hard to push back and support.
The standout player for the home side was Colbinabbin teenager Hugh Hamilton.
Best known as a forward in his times with Colbo, Hamilton is developing into a strong inside midfielder.
"Hugh was hard in and around the contest and when he went forward he looked really dangerous,'' O'Bree said.
"He kicked an unbelievable goal from the pocket when he dribbled it through...he was really good all day."
His twin brother Cooper started across half-back and then moved into the midfield in the second half where he was damaging.
Key forward Ryan O'Keefe only had one goal next to his name, but that didn't reflect his strong impact on the game.
Jack Hickman also had a key influence on the game across half-forward and in the midfield.
The Pioneers had 10 individual goalkickers - led by midfield/forwards Hugh Hamilton and Bode Stevens with two each.
"We weren't as clean as we were the previous week and the scoreboard probably didn't reflect how competitive Gippsland were,'' O'Bree said.
"We had some good passages in the first half, but we didn't make the most of our opportunities.
"It took us a half to break clear of them and it was pleasing to see the boys finish off the game strongly."
The Pioneers are back at the QEO next Sunday to play the Geelong Falcons from 11.30am.
The Geelong Falcons are winless after two matches, including a 57-point loss to the Murray Bushrangers at the QEO on Sunday.
