Herbert finished day one on the PGA National's - The Champions Course at 70 off-the-stick after an opening front-nine of one-under that included six pars, two birdies and one bogey.
The 25-year-old started the back nine with four consecutive pars before reality struck on the opening hole of the renowned "Bear Trap" (holes 15,16 and 17), named in honour of Jack Nicklaus and said to be the toughest three-hole stretch on the PGA Tour.
Herbert's tee shot went over the back of the 163m par-three 15th into the rough, which then followed with a tough chip out of a thick lie which took three attempts before landing it up on the green for a 2m par putt which he sank.
However, he bounced back on the par-five 18th with an eagle that was setup with a 316m drive, followed by a 180m approach then sealed with a successful 8m roll.
Fellow Australian Matt Jones was the round one leader at nine-under 61, Cameron Davis (-4), Cameron Percy (-1) and Adam Scott (-1).
