Bendigo Tech School launches new Girls in STEAM Electric Car Project

Students from Bendigo high schools are participating in the Bendigo Tech School's Girls in STEAM Electric Car Project.

The girls have been tasked with creating an electric car, which will then be available to hire as a community enterprise.

The first phase of the program was a day-long tour of the Safescape and Thales sites in Bendigo on Tuesday.

Safescape general manager Alison Deadman said the company wanted to support more young women join the industry.

"It's exciting for us to be able to support projects like this to encourage more women to be involved in engineering and potentially lead to career opportunities," she said.

"We have a fleet that's predominately men but it's great we're able to support that change."

Bendigo South East College year nine student Lilly Sukkel said it was great to participate in the industry tours. She said she was excited to take part in electric car project throughout 2021.

"Looking at the recent developments in the car industry, electric cars are definitely on the rise," she said. "I wanted to have a look at where the future is heading. The program is jam-packed. It's very exciting."

Ms Sukkel said the future was looking bright for young women heading into science, technology, and engineering fields.

"The traditional male-dominated jobs don't have to be that way," she said. "They're starting to look at a more diverse workforce."

Bendigo Tech School director Graeme Wiggins said the institution was excited to provide these opportunities.

"With our industry partners, we want to continue to encourage females to pursue careers in manufacturing because attracting and retaining more women is important to a stronger manufacturing sector," Mr Wiggins said.
