Leslie Richard Doidge, 53, was sentenced in the Bendigo Magistrates Court on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to charges including drink driving.

The court heard about 6.45pm on April 15 last year, Doidge was driving down Thomas Street in Kangaroo Flat after leaving a friend's house.

Doidge drove erratically in his blue sedan for about 250 metres before he lost control and crashed into a parked car.

Doidge was trapped in the sedan for some time while paramedics, police, and fire crews worked to rescue him.

He told paramedics he drank 15 beers and a bottle of bourbon before getting behind the wheel.

The court heard as he was extracted from the car, he told witnesses, "I smashed it real good, it's f****** cool."

Doidge was taken to Bendigo Health for minor injuries. He underwent a blood test, which later showed he had a blood alcohol reading of 0.262 - more than five times over the legal blood alcohol limit.

The court heard Doidge's car was unregistered without number plates, was not fitted with a required interlock, and was not displaying the necessary probationary plates.

Defence lawyer Robert Timms last week told the court alcohol was a significant issue for Doidge and it was critical he received some support for his problems.

Magistrate Megan Aumair agreed with the submission. She convicted and sentenced Doidge to an 18-month community corrections order.

The corrections order will include supervision, treatment for alcohol abuse, and other programs.

Doidge's driver's licence was also cancelled and disqualified for five years.

Ms Aumair told Doidge he needed to follow the sentence and stay out of trouble.

"I'm giving you an opportunity here," the magistrate said. "You're going to kill yourself if you don't pull yourself up and get help."

If Doidge did not plead guilty, he would have been jailed for six months.
