Bendigo looks at Ewing Park expansion

EWING Park could be expanded to include a new junior cricket sports ground as part of a proposal being investigated by the City of Greater Bendigo. The proposal would see Havlin Street West closed to traffic adjacent to the present sporting facilities and the construction of a new sports ground across the existing roadway. It would also include a new shared walking and cycling path along the creek bank.City of Greater Bendigo councillor Alec Sandner said he had been campaigning for the sports ground expansion since he was first elected to council in November 2008.“It’s something I’ve been pushing for for quite a period of time, there is a need” he said.“There are seven users at Ewing Park and there is not enough ovals to cope with the demand.”Cr Sandner said there had also been interest from other sporting clubs.“Sandhurst Football Club has said it would like to use the oval to train five nights a week to take the pressure off Queen Elizabeth Oval, and others are certainly in favour of the expansion,” he said.“It makes sense to group similar sporting activities in locations where there is already good infrastructure such as club pavilions and a secure water supply in place, but the City must also consider all other impacts to the community as a result of the proposed changes.”Cr Sandner said he hoped public comment would also find in favour of the expansion.United Cricket Club president Shane Hartney said the proposal was fantastic and had their full support.“It means we should be able to play two games of cricket on a Saturday afternoon and two games of junior cricket in the morning,” he said.Anyone wanting information can phone Mitch Kemp on 5454 9514.Comment on the proposal can be sent to the City of Greater Bendigo.Do you think the Ewing Park sporting facilities should be expanded?
