The 25-year-old went out with a one-over par 36 on the front nine that included six pars, one birdie and two bogeys.
He came back into the clubhouse at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club with a one-under 34 on the back nine with six pars, two birdies and one bogey to finish even for the day.
Herbert will start the second round nine shots off the first round leader David Horsey who finished day one at nine-under.
Fellow Australians in the field include Min Woo Lee (-1), Scott Hend (+1), Wade Ormsby (+1) and Jason Scrivener (+5).
The star-studded field also includes world number one Dustin Johnson (-3), Bryson DeChambeau (-5), Lee Westwood (-3) and Patrick Reed (-1).
Herbert will tee off in the second round at 4.20PM AEDT this afternoon alongside Scrivener and Guido Migliozzi.
