A man is fighting for life with serious injuries after crashing into a tree near Daylesford this morning.
The man, believed to be in his early 20s, has been airlifted to The Alfred hospital with "significant lower leg injuries and a head injury", according to police.
He is in a critical condition after being trapped in the van he was driving for about two hours.
Sergeant Jarrod Roberts said the causes of the crash were yet to be determined.
The car smashed into a tree on Daylesford-Malmsbury Road at Wheatsheaf - about eight kilometres east of Daylesford about 11.30am.
"At this point in time we have no real clue as to what's occurred other than the vehicle has left the roadway and hit a tree," Sergeant Jarrod Roberts said.
The investigation continues.

Emergency services are rushing to a serious crash near Daylesford.
A car has smashed into a tree on Daylesford-Malmsbury Road at Wheatsheaf - about eight kilometres east of Daylesford.
The crash occurred just after 11.30am, leaving a man believed to be aged in his 20s trapped in the car.
Police, CFA and Ambulance Victoria are all attending the crash.
The full details of injuries are not yet known, but it is believed the male was the only person involved in the crash.
An air ambulance has been dispatched, with the man trapped for at least 40 minutes as of 12.15pm.
