THE star behind the legend - that’s how local artist Ruth Ellis-Davey sees Bev Brock.Ms Ellis-Davey met both Bev and the late Peter Brock in 1985 and painted Peter’s portrait three times.Ms Ellis-Davey said a portrait of Ms Brock was something she always wanted to do and she began working on it four years ago.“I then put it aside and then came back to it recently,” she said.“The catalyst is her staying power.“She’s a beautiful, lovely lady who has lived for Peter and her children.“The word 'business' is written at her feet because for Bev it is always 'business as usual'.“No matter what is going on, she always has a smile on her face.”For Ms Ellis-Davey, it’s important that she likes the finished product and that the subject finds something they can relate to in it.Ms Brock said she was blown away by the portrait.“When she asked me I was quite taken aback,” she said.“But I’m very impressed with what she has done.“I’m not used to sitting for such a brilliant artist.”Next week Ms Ellis-Davey will move her 180x120cm portrait to Sydney for the Archibald Prize, but she is calling on people to help.“I just need a van or something to get it there,” she said.“As a thank you I’ll do a painting.”
