A grass fire that burned a section of the Northern Highway between Elmore and Rochester is being investigated.

Rochester police are calling for any motorists or witnesses who were in the vicinity of the fire, which started around 11am on December 28.

In particular, police would like to speak with the occupants of a silver Holden Captiva that was towing a trailer. The Captiva's occupants stopped and attempted to put the fire out.
Motorists who were travelling along the highway at the time, who may have dash cam footage are urged to contact Rochester Police on 5484 1100 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
