MORE than $250,000 of restoration works is being undertaken at the VicTrack chimney in Murphy Street, to preserve an important part of Bendigo’s history.A spokesperson for VicTrack said the work, which began in November, would be completed before Christmas.“It’s not on the heritage register but it is one of the last surviving relics of the railway workshops,” he said. The spokesman said the works on the chimney were also to ensure the site was safe. “The top of the chimney was cracking and it was posing a safety risk.“Steal casing has been used to reinforce it.”The restoration work began in November and the site is currently leased to Southern Shorthaul Railroad.
