EAGLEHAWK’S Shayann Stuart is bound for Samoa tomorrow to compete at the Oceania judo championships. The country’s number-one-ranked player in the 52kg division, Stuart has put in many hours of training at the Bendigo Judo Academy in Eaglehawk, and at workouts in Melbourne.Add in Year 12 study commitments and exams, and it’s been a hectic time for the Bendigo Senior Secondary College student. The 18-year-old was one of judo’s rising stars invited to last month’s training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport. The young stars in the national talent identification program spent a week going through their various training programs.“Some players from the Japanese team were also there,” Stuart said.”We had three training sessions each day, and they usually lasted two hours.“There was a lot of ground fighting, and also working on technical moves."Bouts, which were five minutes, were against players from all different weights.”After starting the year competing in the 57kg division, Stuart has moved down to the 52kg class.“It’s made a dramatic difference. I was just on 53kg and a lot of opponents were three or four kilos heavier,” she said of duels in the higher weight class.Stuart fought in the 57kg division at the national titles was and third in the young women’s, 16 to 20 years. The move to 52kg was capped by winning the senior and young women titles at the NSW championships.Stuart also won the open and young women crowns at the Victorian titles and was third in seniors.Stuart took up judo when she was six and has racked up thousands of hours’ training at the Victoria Street dojo, where her father, Stephen, is sensei.“I started competing for state and national titles when I was 14, and really enjoy working on new moves and trying to improve my skills,” said the judo ace.The Samoa campaign is not the first time Stuart has represented Australia. She competed at last year’s Oceania titles in New Zealand and was fourth in the 57kg class.A goal is to win the 52kg final at the 2001 national titles held on the Queen’s Birthday holiday weekend. For Stuart the long-term goal is to represent Australia at the 2012 London Olympics. The bouts in Samoa will play a key role in achieving her Olympic ambition.
