BILL White has been around horses for more than 57 years. The Huntly-based 74-year-old can’t imagine life without his trotters.“They keep me smiling,’’ White said with a grin yesterday.“If I didn’t have horses to train and drive, what would I do?”It helps me keep active.’’White has no plans to slow down. Despite not driving as much as he used to, White still loves training horses as much as ever.He still does more than a fair job with a small team of eight horses. Two of his trotters - Brevillian and Billy The Brat - will line up in tomorrow’s lucrative Australasian Breeders Crown finals at Tabcorp Park at Melton.Two-year-old Brevillian has been a model of consistency with two wins and three placings from nine starts. The gelding’s greatest assets are its manners and its good gate speed.“He’s drawn well (gate three) and if he can get across and lead he’ll run a good race,’’ White said.“He’s shown that he’ll trot all the way, so if some of the others don’t trot we’ll be a chance to pick up a cheque.“We can’t be too confident because it’s such a hard race.’’White rates former Kiwi trotter Landoras Pearl, now trained at Melton by Graeme Lang, as the horse to beat in the two-year-old final.“All the talk is that Graeme’s horse is very good,’’ White said. The second half of White’s tilt at a first Breeders Crown trophy is four-year-old Billy The Brat.White nearly discarded Billy The Brat as a two-year-old because “we thought he was no bloody good’’.But a gear change, literally, and some patience has paid off.“He had to be gelded twice because they missed one testicle the first time,’’ White said.“He’s caused us a few problems, but he’s come good.’’Billy The Brat is only lightly-raced for a four-year-old, but he could become the best horse White has trained. The older half-brother of Brevillian, Billy The Brat has three wins from eight starts and was an eye-catching fourth to short-priced favourite Skyvalley in last week’s heat of this race.”He’s getting stronger,’’ White said.“He finishes off his races well, but he’s still got a lot of improvement to go.“We think he’ll be a very good horse in another year or so.“This is a very good field, so it would be great just to see him pick up a cheque.’’Bill White’s son Ian, who part-owns the two trotters, will drive the duo tomorrow. These days Bill only drives when Ian is unavailable because of work commitments.“There’s one more thing I’d like to do as a driver and that’s drive at the new Tabcorp Park track,’’ Bill said.“I drove at the Showgrounds and I drove at Moonee Valley, so it would be good to have Tabcorp Park as well.“There’s not too many drivers out there who could say they’ve driven on all three of harness racing’s main tracks.’’White and Sedgwick trainer/driver Ross Graham spearhead a strong central Victorian contingent in tomorrow’s trotters finals.Graham has Group One winner Rostevarren in the 2YO final and Sassy Pinevale in the 3YO final.Rostevarren has an undeniable chance of picking up another Group One event, while Sassy Pinevale must overcome a wide draw if she’s to repeat her placing in last year’s 2YO final.
