When the fault was detected, the crossing activated its fail safe and lowered the gates.
V/Line crews arrived on scene quickly to repair the fault.
Victoria Police were also called to the scene to control traffic and direct drivers to detours.
No train services were delayed as a result of the fault.
"We thank road users for their patience while we worked to reopen the Midland Highway level crossing in Bagshot as quickly and safely as possible following an equipment fault," the spokesperson said.
