The 27-year-old was in a vehicle police pulled over in a McDonald's car park in Gisborne on Thursday morning, the Bendigo Magistrates' Court heard on Friday.
The occupants told police they were driving home to Bendigo from the Geelong area.
When an officer asked if there was anything dangerous in the car, the 27-year-old allegedly handed a knife to police.

During a search of the vehicle, police allegedly found a bag containing amphetamine in the door beside the seat the man was sitting in.
The accused admitted to having further items in his pants.
This was allegedly an envelope containing amphetamine and cocaine.
The court was told there was an alleged total weight of 263 grams of amphetamine and 143 grams of cocaine.
The man was charged with offences that included trafficking a commercial quantity of drugs, trafficking drugs, and possessing a controlled weapon.
The police prosecutor, Leading Senior Constable Remo Antolini, told the court the man made full admissions in interview and told police he was picking up drugs in Geelong.
The man applied for bail on Friday and when asked if he would like to ask any questions of the prosecutor, he said no and "everything stated is correct".

The man told magistrate Rodney Higgins he had a stable place to live with his partner, for whom he provided financial and emotional support.
He said he worked for himself and had jobs booked in until next April, with no one else to complete them.
The court heard he had depression and anxiety, with upcoming psychological appointments he wanted to make.
The man said he wanted to be released on bail so he could work and support his family before he had to "face the consequences of [his] actions".
Leading Senior Constable Antolini submitted the man had not demonstrated the exceptional circumstances necessary to secure bail.
He said the alleged quantity of drugs was large and likely worth over $100,000.
Leading Senior Constable Antolini also raised concerns the man presented a flight risk.
Mr Higgins said he could not grant bail because the man had not shown exceptional circumstances.
He remanded him in custody to appear at court again next March.
