TRIBUTE: Heathcote's Wayne Bell and Mount Pleasant's Alan Kennedy hold the Cliff and Peter White Memorial Shield.

MOUNT Pleasant and Heathcote will pay tribute to Cliff and Peter White today when they play for the memorial shield named in their honour. The Cliff and Peter White Memorial Shield is played for each year in the first game between Mount Pleasant and Heathcote in the Heathcote District Football League. It was first played for in 1997. The Blues have won it every year, except for 2007.Cliff and Peter White were two of the most respected figures at the Mount Pleasant Football-Netball Club. The pair were lost at sea after a boating accident at Port Campbell on November 2, 1996, along with 26-year-old Mark Bell.Peter was 26, while Cliff had just turned 50.After playing with Golden Square, Kennington and North Bendigo, Cliff joined Mount Pleasant in the early 1970s, where he went on to coach and be president of the power club.Cliff’s son, Peter, coached the Blues’ 1993 and 1994 grand final wins against Heathcote, while his last game was Kyabram’s 1996 Goulburn Valley Football League premiership against Tatura. As well as being one of country Victoria’s most revered footballers - winning his first senior best and fairest at the age of just 16 - Peter also played three games for Carlton between 1989 and 1991.Heathcote’s Wayne Bell was the opposing coach to Peter in the 1993 grand final, which the Blues won by 20 points - the first of a hat-trick of grand final wins by Mount Pleasant over Heathcote.“I remember we got the jump on Mounts in the 1993 grand final, but then Peter just turned the game in the third quarter by kicking a couple of impossible goals,’’ Bell said.“Peter played senior footy as a 14-year-old at Mounts and tore it up from the start.“I couldn’t speak highly enough of the White family and they certainly had a lot of friends at both Mount Pleasant and Heathcote.’’Mount Pleasant’s Alan Kennedy made his senior debut for the Blues in 1979 - Cliff’s last season as a player.“Even though he was coming to the end of his career, Cliff had skills well before his time,’’ Kennedy said.“He was great on both feet and still a very good player in his last year.’’Heathcote and Mount Pleasant clash today at Barrack Reserve.
