Fire danger is set to be high in central Victoria on Thursday, while Wimmera residents have been warned of very high fire danger. The Mallee's rating is severe.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of high to severe fire danger ratings across the state, given forecast hot weather and northerly winds.

Bendigo is forecast to hit 36 degrees on Thursday after a warm night. The Bureau has forecast a cool change moving across the state on Thursday night.

Parts of the Wimmera are set to get even hotter, with 38 degrees forecast for Horsham.

It comes after the CFA warned Victorians to take care around private fires, such as burn offs and campfires.

Greater Bendigo's fire danger period is yet to be declared.

But several central and western council areas, such as Gannawarra, Campaspe, Loddon, Buloke are set to enter restrictions soon.

Bushfire risk is forecast to be less severe this year because of a wet-weather La Nina system.

In late November 2018 central Victoria experienced a code red fire danger rating - the first in a decade.
