The election has, of course, been an ongoing part of American life for months - from presidential primary elections and caucuses to early and absentee voting, it's been going on for a while.
When should I expect results?
Voting in all US states will be closed by mid-morning Australian Eastern Daylight Time. That varies in Australian states. All the predicted "important states" close by 2pm AEDT, but some say as early as 1pm. It could be all over mid-afternoon, Australian time, OR it may take weeks.
Where can I watch the US presidential election on free-to-air TV?
More appropriate would almost be the question: which channel isn't covering the election? Most free-to-air TV channels are covering the election. Here's how the channels line up for coverage.
ABC: Watch on the ABC NEWS Channel or iView. Michael Rowland is in Washington DC for a special US Election edition of 'News Breakfast' from 6am. Ellen Fanning, Stan Grant and David Speers will have continuous coverage from 10am as the day unfolds. Expect top see election specialist Antony Green and Casey Briggs too.
7NEWS: Starts with an extended edition of 'Sunrise' from 5:30am AEDT. Natalie Barr is in Washington, DC. From 10am former US correspondents Michael Usher and Angela Cox will anchor the coverage. Reporter Ashlee Mullany is embedded in the Donald Trump camp and her colleague Tim Lester is with Joe Biden.
Nine: Starts at 5am AEDT and continues into an extended version of the 'Today'. The formal US election coverage starts at 11am. Peter Overton is the host.
Channel 10: Has partnered with CBS News in the US to bring expert opinions an analysis live on '10 News First' from 11am.
SBS: Coverage starts at 11am and continues until 4pm.
