Election officials are wading through about 65,000 ballots and counting as the City of Greater Bendigo's election tally begins.

There are 94,000 registered voters in and around Bendigo and the man overseeing the count is expecting somewhere between 75,000 and 85,000 to cast their vote in 2020.
Election manager Carl Chirgwin said ballots were expected to keep arriving today and potentially throughout the rest of the week.

"We are expecting to get a lot more today because there was no (Australia Post) delivery on Friday," he said, referring to the public holiday.
Mr Chirgwin's team has now begun "extracting" votes, a process that involves comparing signed envelopes to the electoral roll, then removing the ballot.
The process is expected to finish by Wednesday.
By then, officials will be well into entering ballot information into the VEC's vote-tracking computer systems.
That second process is expected to begin tomorrow and carry through until Friday, with late votes to be counted the following Monday and Wednesday.
Mr Chirgwin expects Bendigo's provisional results could be confirmed as soon as Wednesday 4 September, but said it was still to early in the process to know exact dates and times.
