Herbert had a heavy start on the European Tour event at Galgorm Castle Northern Ireland, carding three consecutive bogeys on the first three holes.
He managed to get back under control over the next six holes, finishing the front-nine at two-over after birdieing the ninth.
Herbert got back in the groove on the back-nine with two birdies within the first three holes to level his card at even-par.
However, come the 13th he carded a double-bogey which put him back to two-over with five holes still to play.
He managed to stay out of trouble from 14 through to 17 before ending the round on a high with a birdie on the 18th to see him one-over for the day.
Herbert's playing partner and 2019 Open Champion Shane Lowry also had a tough day on the course wrapping up the first round at five-over.
Herbert, Lowry and George Coetzee will tee up for the second round tonight at 10pm AEST.
In other golf news, the Neangar Park Premier League returns this weekend.
The tournament was two rounds down before it was put on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions across regional Victoria.
Neangar Park club captain Tim Williams said it was fantastic to have the competition back up and running.
"It's fantastic for our club as it generates participation during the winter months and even though we had to divert it due to COVID-19, we're now able to relaunch it during spring," Williams said.
The Neangar Park Premier League is a weekly tournament played in conjunction to normal competition where the top three scores from each of the eight six-player teams are counted.
After the seventh round of the competition there will then be two weeks of finals.
At this stage the grand final is scheduled to be played on November 7.
In addition to the Premier League, Williams was thrilled to see normal club competitions return as well as groups of four.
"Everyone's spirits have certainly lifted around the club, especially as it's been a challenging year," he said.
"Both competition and groups of four enhance both the social aspects of golf but also the camaraderie. It's fantastic."
