STAR Wedderburn and North Bendigo key forward Brady Herdman has taken out the top spot in our compilation of the top 50 players with the most Addy ranking points across the Heathcote District, Loddon Valley and North Central leagues since 2012.
Combining his 352.0 rankings points at Wedderburn (2012-14) and his 317.0 ranking points at North Bendigo (2015-19), Herdman has come in at No.1 with a total of 669.0 points.
The Addy's player rankings use a system based on the weekly six best players submitted by clubs, with a weighting given towards contributions made to a winning team (similar to the starting point for umpires in casting votes post-match) that produce a ranking total.
The points system:
Winning team - 1st best (16.0 points); 2nd best (13.5); 3rd best (11.0); 4th best (8.5); 5th best (6.0); 6th best (3.5).
Losing team - 1st best (7.0); 2nd best (6.0); 3rd best (5.0); 4th best (4.0); 5th best (3.0); 6th best (2.0).
Drawn game (both teams) - 1st best (10.0); 2nd best (8.5); 3rd best (7.0); 4th best (5.5); 5th best (4.0); 6th best (2.5).
In short, the rankings aim to reflect performing consistently, contributing strongly to a win and longevity and Herdman clearly ticks all three boxes - particularly the winning team component.
Throughout the eight seasons of the timespan Herdman played in six premierships - three with Wedderburn in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (he was also part of the Redbacks' 2011 flag), and three with North Bendigo in 2015, 2016 and 2019.
"For such a good individual player, Brady always put the team first and you just knew in big moments of big games when you needed someone to stand up, you just had to put the ball in his vicinity and he'd do the rest," Herdman's former North Bendigo coach Rob Bennett said on Monday.
"His work-rate and professionalism was first-class, but it's that team-first attitude that probably sums up best why he's played in so many premierships."
Throughout the timespan Herdman featured among his team's best players 58 times - 29 for the Redbacks and 29 for the Bulldogs - including 42 where was rated one of the top three players.
Herdman narrowly edged out Huntly's three-time Cheatley medallist Ryan Semmel, who is second on the list with 648.5 points, followed by Corey Gregg (Marong and Boort) with 640.5 points and Gavin James (Pyramid Hill and Huntly) with 636.0 points.
Across the three competitions, the classy James is the player who has featured among his team's best players the most with 80 games, followed by Nick Waterson (Maiden Gully YCW and North Bendigo) with 79 games.
Waterson rounds out the top five with 617.5 points.
