After the return to stage three restrictions across regional Victoria last week, the BVA made the announcement in accordance with advice provided by the state government.
"The Bendigo Volleyball Association Board have made the difficult and unfortunate decision to not proceed with any further volleyball competitions or tournaments at this point in time for the remainder of 2020," the BVA board announced on its Facebook page.
"As a duty of care to all within our volleyball community, the board feels that this is in everyone's best interest and safety."
The board acknowledged that current restrictions had only been set until mid-September, but given so much uncertainty it was possible that they might be extended.
"Regardless of any extensions, it is envisaged that the return to group and community based sport, competitions and the undertaking of tournaments will once again be a gradual and stepped return," the BVA board said.
The BVA was in the process of putting together a junior domestic season, but the return to stage three put an unfortunate end to that prospect.
"For a lot of the kids volleyball is their outlet to de-stress and have some fun with their mates which is something they haven't really been able to do with all of the social distancing and lockdown requirements, " BVA president Vanessa Phillips said last month.
But above all the BVA urged the volleyball community to follow all rules to return to a normal environment as soon as possible.
"The BVA board would like to urge all of our volleyball community to please follow the government's restrictions so we can all return to a safe living environment as soon as possible," the BVA board said.
Volleyball has been a popular sport in Bendigo since the early 1960s with the first competitions held in the YMCA building in Mundy Street.
From its early days to now the sport has continued to grow every year with participants from a range of ages, with the BVA having a reputation of developing strong players who compete around the state and across Australia.
In a normal year the BVA holds autumn and spring competitions at the Bendigo Stadium for men and women, mixed, and juniors which includes primary, 15-and-under and 17-and-under age groups.
