But Astin Harvey was in for a surprise when police turned up with lights and sirens.
The seven-year-old, from Kangaroo Flat, wants to become a police officer like his uncle.
Police made time to visit after Astin's mother, Sally McCallum, called to let them know the birthday party her family had planned for late July had been cancelled.
They came armed with posters, chocolates, and other goodies for Astin and his four-year-old brother.
The attending officers let the boys sit in the front of the police car and learn how the lights and sirens worked.
"They put it over the police radio, 'We're here with Astin Harvey and it's his birthday'," Ms McCallum said.
"Another lady radioed over wishing him a happy birthday.
"He was so stunned... it was just amazing."
She said the officers made Astin's day special.
They also gave the family something to smile about - and they did for days afterwards.
"We kind of accepted the fact it would be a normal day," Ms McCallum said.
"That just put a whole positive vibe on it. It was really nice."
