THREE IN A ROW: Sandhurst's A grade team won a great contest.

SANDHURST won its third successive A grade netball premiership in yesterday's thrilling clash with Golden Square in the All Seasons Bendigo Football-Netball League grand final. The win by the maroon and blue stopped Golden Square's winning streak after it won the A reserve, B grade, and 17-and-under play-offs at the Bendigo Aquatic Centre court adjacent to the QEO.In the A grade match of the Bendigo Bank-backed competition, Golden Square looked the better in the first half, with the goalshooting by Jody Richards and Erica Schippers a highlight.Lia Marrone was the star in mid-court for the blue and gold.Sandhurst's Meghan Atkins was superb at wing attack. The Hurst made some bold changes at half-time as playing coach Jannaya Webb was replaced by Ingrid Henderson in goals. Roz McEniry was relentless in her defence of the goal circle and lax passing by Sandhurst's was costly as the lead became three goals. It took time for Sandhurst's new goalshooting combination to adjust, but they did and levelled the score on a flying Stacey Randall intercept around Golden Square's goal ring. By three-quarter time, Sandhurst was in front. The Hurst's Maddi Foott was lively in the goal circle taking intercepts and rebounds on the few occasions Golden Square missed.Square regained the lead by scoring consecutive goals on a Sandhurst centre pass break and held ball.Foott's rebound on a rare Schippers' miss at goal once again levelled the match. A Golden Square held ball in the attacking end of the centre third was quickly propelled into Sandhurst's attack and a quick move by Claire Gibbs led to a goal. With less than three minutes on the clock, Sandhurst defender Ashleigh Cole intercepted and the play was capped by Briona Giddings' pass to Gibbs for a goal.Henderson goaled on a Sandhurst centre pass to clinch victory and a seventh A grade premiership. In A reserve, Golden Square won a closely-fought duel with Kangaroo Flat. The Kangaroos adjusted well to the windy conditions.Goal defence Kirstie Harvey played a close checking game and won several rebounds, while Nina Cass was on target as the Flat went to a five-goal lead at quarter-time.Golden Square switched Tammy Williams to attack and quickly gained the lead.Kangaroo Flat fought back to lead by the long break. It was goal-for-goal in the third quarter. The lowlight was when 250-game player Tamika Stewart injured her knee.Gradey McNicol capitalised on Golden Square's play to level scores by the10-minute mark of the final quarter. On a Golden Square centre pass Kangaroo Flat had two forays into their attacking third yet neither paid off and again McNicol scored for a one goal lead. Flat's Brooke Emmerson scored, but Square hit back. With little time left, Square applied greater pressure forcing an easy turnover on a contact by the Flat's Nikki Manning and McNicol scored successive goals to secure a three goal victory. In B grade, Sandhurst raced to a six-goal lead before Golden Square settled.A more composed Square outfit limited Sandhurst's scoring opportunities while Ashleigh Weeks and Charlene MacKenzie shared the workload in the goal circle. Although outscored in the third quarter, Golden Square led at the final break.Kirsten Cunningham was dogged in the defensive circle holding her opponent to one goal in the final term.In the 17-and-under match, an 18 goal to five third quarter blitz set Golden Square on its way to victory.Joanna Keyte and Kate O'Brien teamed superbly in mid-court for Golden Square and Louise Dupuy starred in attack.Georgia Tatnall and Elli Cleary formed a tight defensive line restricting Sandhurst from gaining any flow to their system of play. After losing only one game this season, to Sandhurst in the second semi-final, Golden Square scored 36 goals to 15 in the second half.
