It's dangerous territory to be meddling with something so important to the future retirement plans of so many Australians - particularly low and middle income workers who face a more confronting set of challenges to be able to sustain a comfortable and affordable lifestyle in retirement.
Winding back the superannuation levy paid on behalf of workers is simply not fair.
This system was agreed to many years ago by our politicians, many of whom can feel free to make suggestions about the future retirement income of others, whilst they continue to enjoy an incredibly generous super scheme funded by the rest of us.
In the real world, to may Australians already face the prospect of not having enough super when they retire, a circumstance that will inevitably see them become reliant upon government support in their later years.
That makes this latest talk about interfering with super even more annoying.
It's been reported upwards of 170,000 mostly young Australians accessed their super as part of the emergency early release scheme introduced during the pandemic, and this has taken away a lot of their savings. Many made that decision in the knowledge superannuation is due to rise in the years ahead, and they would rightly have thought this would help get back on track.
In an era of low or stagnant wage growth, rising house prices and now high unemployment due to the impact of the pandemic, workers have fewer levers to pull to help themselves navigate their way towards a decent retirement nest egg.
Perhaps what these MPs should do is call for a broader review of the superannuation industry that does more than just highlight the system's many faults.
Too many fees, dodgy insurance products and too many workers not knowing enough about the superannuation industry are the ingredients of something that needs changing - for the good of those the initiative was set up to support.
