The health service's chief executive, Ian Fisher, today received a draft report.
Castlemaine Health said the review benchmarked the service against the procedures, policies, clinical practice protocols and maternity clinical governance systems that determined the capacity, capability and safety of a maternity service.
The health service said the draft, which was not publicly available, contained findings and recommendations.
The board was due to receive a briefing on Monday, followed by meetings with GP obstetricians and midwives on Tuesday in relation to the recommendations.
"We expect to make a preliminary statement about the draft report next week followed by a further statement on the findings and recommendations when the final report is adopted by the board," Mr Fisher said.
A Clinical Maternity Lead position has already been created to oversee implementation of the recommendations "and ensure the service is operating in line with appropriate quality and safety standards."
Birthing services at Castlemaine Health were suspended when the review started mid-May.
Community members had called for services to be reinstated, if it was safe to do so.
"Reinstatement of the maternity service is targeted for July 1 but remains subject to the review's findings and recommendations," a statement Castlemaine Health issued on Friday said.
Mr Fisher said Castlemaine Health was doing its utmost to reopen the service as soon as possible, "but need the reassurance of the review to ensure we have the appropriate systems and safeguards in place".
"I understand the immense importance of birthing decisions to our community and am deeply sorry for the inconvenience to those women who had been due to give birth here while the review has been taking place," he said.
"I'd like to thank the community for their patience and support."
The Department of Health and Human Services and Safer Care Victoria have supported Castlemaine Health through the review.
