Workers will inspect the Kalimna Basin in coming weeks during the major once-in-a-decade operation.
Water flows into the enclosed storage area from the Castlemaine Water Treatment Plant, before it washes through the rest of the network.
Workers expect to spend three days testing the basin from 25 June and, if successful, they will drain it from 2 July for a condition report.
More news:
Coliban will also install a new "mixer" in the basin, manager of customer operations Steve Dunlop said
"The mixer will ensure water age and disinfection levels are very consistent throughout the entire basin, which improves the uniformity of water that is delivered to our customers throughout the network," he said.
Coliban will avoid breaks in supply by allowing water to bypass the basin.
Customers may notice a change in water taste and pressure.
"This will return to normal once the project is complete on Friday 10 July 2020, weather dependent," Mr Dunlop said.
