Images of the King Street store on social media showed stickers on the exterior that appeared to be Kmart-branded and read 'Big news! Our store is changing' and 'Bendigo Central Store Opening August 27th'.
However, a Target spokesperson confirmed the stickers were not approved Kmart or Target signs.
"We have announced no changes to our Bendigo store," the spokesperson said on Friday.
The signs were no longer on the store on Friday morning.
Last week parent company Wesfarmers announced scores of Target stores across the country would close or be converted into Kmart stores.
At that time, it was confirmed the Maryborough Target would close completely, while those in Echuca, Castlemaine and Woodend would become Kmart stores.
The future of the Bendigo store was yet to be decided, as the company was still in discussions with landlords.
A spokesperson said the future of the store would be confirmed once a decision was made and staff had been informed.
