Governments at all levels have to consider how to ease restrictions and with this, the financial support provided to millions of Australians, while plotting the economic recovery we so desperately want and need, and without jeopardising the health and safety of us all.
That's going to be extremely challenging - for the government and equally for those who have come to rely on the additional support.
It's going to be difficult to explain to welfare recipients that the amount of financial support they receive is reverting to what it was a few months ago, when the need remains.
Prior to COVID-19 there was already a vocal campaign to lift payment rates to some of our nation's most vulnerable citizens, and if we simply end up back in the same place we were before the pandemic then many will say we have failed.
These same Australians will struggle to reconcile themselves to the fact the additional relief provided throughout the pandemic crisis was only meant to be temporary, when their hardship is ongoing.
The federal government faces an incredibly difficult task in seeking to return our nation's finances to as healthy a state as they were, and that renaissance needs to be considered over a period of years.
But our finances are finite, and striking the right balance between prudent financial management and appropriate financial support will be one of the most incredibly complex undertakings for the government since the world plunged head first into the coronavirus pandemic.
The national cabinet initiative that has seen national, state and territory leaders work together in a cooperative manner for the good of Australia needs to be preserved.
Our nation is so much the better when we lead together.
Good ideas deserve scrutiny, but most of all, they need support and champions.
