Sutton Grange residents Ron and Marge Townrow had been listed as finalists in the Improving Life After Stroke Award category.
The award recognises people who strive to improve the lives of people who have been impacted by stroke. That includes stroke survivors, carers, volunteers, health professionals, and researchers.
"We're very honoured and humbled to have won," Mrs Townrow said. "We accept this on behalf of a lot of other people.
"Those people who have been through, or are still part of, the Bendigo Stroke Support Centre and Central Victorian Stroke Support Group."
Mr Townrow was fit, healthy, and had no known health problems when he had a stroke 19 years ago.
His wife Marge became his carer and throughout his recovery, and in the years since, the couple have become involved in the Central Victorian Stroke Support Group.
They have also volunteered at Bendigo Health for seven years and are involved with the Bendigo Stroke Support Centre.
"We hope this award will promote more awareness around stroke," Mr Townrow said. "It already has. We have received so many messages already."
The couple wanted to thank Bendigo Health stroke coordinator Tessa Coupland, who nominated them for the award, and the Stroke Foundation for its work.
Stroke Foundation chief executive Sharon McGowan congratulated the couple on their win.
"Ron and Marge are an inspiration," Ms McGowan said. "Their drive to ease the burden of stroke others is to be admired and their impact in their community is clear."
