Police and paramedics were called to the incident at the corner of Mitchell Street and Hargreaves Street about 1.30pm on Monday.
Bendigo Highway Patrol Senior Constable Paul Lethlean said the 10-year-old boy had run out onto the street between two buses without looking.
The motorist, who was driving about 30km/h on a green light, did not see the boy and hit him.
Senior Constable Lethlean said the boy was taken to Bendigo Health with a suspected broken leg.
The officer said the collision happened only about 15 metres away from the pedestrian crossing.
