The association has established a helpline of sorts for people in the district, which draws upon the assistance of some of its 70-odd members and other kindhearted volunteers.

All a resident would need to do is contact the association's chair, Gloria Pocock, and explain their situation.

She would set about tasking a volunteer with responding, if they were able to help.

Ms Pocock said there were at least 20 volunteers willing to lend a hand.

"We're a tight-knit community in Redesdale," she said.

She said the association decided it would be proactive and let the community know there was help available, if needed.

"The whole idea was we just let everyone know they're not alone," Ms Pocock said.

The so-called 'helpline' has only been around since about Monday. Nobody has had to use it, so far.

"We're hoping it won't even be needed," Ms Pocock said.

She said no-one in Redesdale and district was in self-isolation, though some residents were limiting their social interactions.

Ms Pocock was particularly concerned about people who might need to self-isolate who were living alone.

"If someone is stuck at home and feeling alone we need to let them know someone is here," she said.

The 'helpline' is only to be used by residents of Redesdale and district.
