CINEMAS in the Bendigo region are encouraging healthy residents to come in and watch a film amid growing COVID-19 precautions.

While Eaglehawk's Star Cinema had seen a "pretty drastic" decline in visitor numbers because of the virus, the cinema's business manager Martin Myles said it was still open for patrons.
"Conservatively, we're about 50 per cent down on our average attendance," he said.
"But it's been normal in terms of we're still screening films. We're just doing as much as we can in house to ensure the safety and comfort of our patrons."
Among the changes, the Star Cinema has spaced its furniture, provided hand sanitiser for volunteers and staff, and encouraged card only transactions.
"We're taking extra precautions for the safety and comfort of staff, patrons, and volunteers," Mr Myles said.
"We encourage people who are vulnerable, at risk, or who are displaying symptoms to stay away from the cinema.
"But as time goes on and maybe even already, there is going to be a need for a nourishment of the soul. People might want to escape the panic and we can help."
Bendigo Cinemas has also seen a drop off in patrons because of the coronavirus.
"It has been slowly decreasing in numbers since probably the start of March," the cinema's sales and marketing manager Steve Serpell said.

"Those numbers have dropped off but also the availability of key releases haven't been there."
Bendigo Cinemas has also introduced changes, including capping auditorium capacity to less than 100 people, providing extra cleaning in public areas, and minimising cash handling.
"We're absolutely mindful of the parameters we have to work with regarding safe distancing and what not," Mr Serpell said.
"But we're also aware that we can provide a safe location where people can do life. If we can add normality for people in this difficult time, then we'd like to be part of that."
Both Mr Myles and Mr Serpell said the situation around coronavirus was fluid, with advice from governments changing each day.
They encouraged patrons to keep an eye on the cinemas' websites and social media sites for the latest operation information.
