Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday announced elective surgeries for more than 7000 Victorians would be brought forward as part of a new $100 million COVID-19 response package.
More than $60 million will be made available to both public and private hospitals to undertake additional surgeries like thyroid, prostate, hernia, or gynaecological surgeries.
About $10 million will go towards increasing personal protective equipment supplies in Victoria, including 100 million gloves, 10 million masks, and 1.5 million gowns.
"We know that when the COVID-19 pandemic reaches its peak our hospitals are going to be busier than ever," Mr Andrews said.
"So it makes sense to get as many patients as possible in for elective surgery now, while we still can.
"This is to help avoid longer waiting times now and ensure additional capacity in the hospital system, when we need it most."
Bendigo Health chief executive Peter Faulkner said the hospital had been preparing for this scenario.
"We have not received any formal advice on this matter," Mr Faulkner said. "However, Bendigo Health is actively planning to ensure we can provide elective surgery to priority cases.
"We have pre-existing contracts in place with private surgical services in Bendigo. We will be working with them this week to consider what can be done."
A coronavirus screening area has been set up at Bendigo Health in preparation for an increase in patient numbers.
So far, Bendigo Health has tested more than 100 people for COVID-19 with no positive results being returned.
There are 57 confirmed coronavirus cases in Victoria. Eight new cases were confirmed on Sunday morning - six men and two women with ages ranging from their teens to their 60s.
Victoria's Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said all cases were acquired overseas or through close contact with known confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Mr Sutton advised anyone who displays symptoms should call the Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398.
