The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds, as a "vigorous" cold front moves through Victoria.
The bureau says strong southerly winds are expected behind the front, before easing on Saturday.
The high winds are possible near and north of the central ranges from Friday night and into Saturday morning.
Bendigo, Maryborough, Castlemaine and Kyneton are among the locations that could be affected.
Bendigo, Castlemaine and Kyneton also fall within an area that could see severe thunderstorms, although no official warning has yet been issued for that.
The State Emergency Service advises that people:
- Check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured and move vehicles under cover or away from trees
- Stay indoors and away from windows
- If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors
- Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways
- Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees
- Stay away from fallen powerlines; always assume they are live
