IN a Bendigo league that has become renowned for the dominance of the Bendigo-based clubs, Kangaroo Flat was the exception during the 2010s decade.

Of the Bendigo-based clubs, the Roos were the only one during the 2010s not to play in a senior grand final.
Actually, the Roos played in no senior finals at all, with their best finish a trio of frustrating sixth-places in 2010, 2014 and 2016.
Castlemaine was the only other club throughout the 2010s not to play finals, with Kangaroo Flat's last September appearance remaining its 2009 preliminary final loss to South Bendigo.
In both 2010 and 2014 the Roos had gone into the final round sitting in fifth spot, only to surrender their position at the last hurdle.
One consistent that remained throughout the Roos during the decade was ruckman Nick Lang, who played all 10 seasons.
Lang topped the Roos' decade best player votes (six for being named best, five for second best and so on) with 226.
Lang featured in the Roos' best players 60 times for the decade and in August of 2018 celebrated his 200 game milestone.
"A lot of what has kept me at the club so long is my best mates that I played junior footy with were there and we had a good connection with the club," Lang said in the lead up to his 200th.
"I've stuck it out for this long and I really want to see the club back in the finals and contending before I finish up."
The Roos' leading goalkicker of the decade was Justin Maddern, who kicked 154 across the 2010-11 seasons.
Maddern booted 100 in 2010 and was named at centre half-forward in the BFNL Team of the Decade.
Fellow Roos' forward Tyrone Downie (144 goals) also made the Team of the Decade on the interchange.
The Roos were unable to shake off their Golden Square hoodoo during the decade and have now lost 38 in a row against the Bulldogs dating back to 2001.
But they did come agonisingly close to snapping that losing streak on Good Friday in 2014 when the Roos had Brendan Fevola (four goals) in their team and led by 20 points at three quarter-time, only to falter late and lose by a goal.
Win that game under lights on their home deck and not only is Kangaroo Flat's enduring losing run against Golden Square no longer referenced, but they also would have played finals in 2014. Talk about a double whammy.
The decade's football highlight for the Roos came at the end when their under-18s came from the elimination final last year to win the premiership.
