About 10,000 litres of wastewater overflowed from a sewer maintenance hole behind Mill Street, Kyneton. It entered the Campaspe River via a stormwater drain.
Coliban Water announced the incident in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

The blockage has been cleared, with clean up, disinfection of the affected river, and water sampling underway, Coliban Water said.
It attributed the blockage to wet wipes, and other materials that can't break down in a sewer network.
The Environment Protection Authority has attended. It is monitoring the situation.
Coliban Water has been approached for comment.
