Now racing for Old Melburnians, Symons clocked a time of 51.98, four-hundredths of a second away from the time he ran to win the under-20 400m hurdles at last year's national track titles.
Saturday night's contest was won by Chris Douglas in 50.02.
Before moving to Melbourne to further his athletics career, Symons previously competed with Bendigo Harriers.
Another athlete with links to Harriers, Liam Richardson also competed at the Sydney Track Classic.
Richardson ran the Ambulant 100m in 14.50 to be eighth at Sydney's Olympic Park.
Next major event on Athletics Australia's track and field calendar is the Queensland Track Classic on March 21.
A day later and the national track and field titles start at Sydney's Olympic Park.
The national championships will be run from March 21 to 29.
