After almost 120 years and a kindly push by the project's sponsors, four giant clocks were yesterday installed in the lofty clock tower via cherry picker.
Bendigo clockmaker Stephen Young spent several hours elevated in the air installing the heavy creations he has laboured over for four months.
The project involved the installation of clock movements within the top section of the town hall tower and the building of four clock faces, each weighing just over 40 kg and measuring more than two metres in diameter.
The Rotary Club of Bendigo, The Advertiser and the City of Greater Bendigo council funded the $61,500 project to fill the long-standing void.
Provision to install a clock in the tower was originally made when architect William Vahland redesigned the Town Hall in 1878, but it has taken until now to happen.
The Rotary Club made its $35,000 donation to recognise the Centenary of Rotary International, while The Advertiser's $20,000 contribution was to mark its 150th anniversary last year. The council contributed $6500.
