To master his ability behind the wheel he went overseas to the home of sprintcar racing, the United States.
"During my off-season we went to America and raced over in Knoxville, Iowa," Hickman said.
"I definitely learned a lot about racing. It's a different level over there.
"The tracks are a lot bigger and the race craft is certainly different compared to Australia."
Hickman was able to hit the tracks in America thanks to support from Dave Challons and Californian Harley Van Dyke.
However, Hickman's biggest gain while overseas was crossing paths with one of Van Dyke's crew members, Evan Holsclaw.
After the pair got to know each other, one night at a party they joked about Holsclaw coming to Australia to work with Hickman Motorsport.
One thing led to another and before too long he was on a plane to join the Hickman team for the 2019-20 World Series Sprintcar season.
"It's been amazing to come out to Australia and see how they race over the other side of the world," Holsclaw said.
"I'm blessed to have the opportunity to come and see what it's all about."
Holsclaw, who is a Sacramento native, is a crew chief back in America.
He has noticed some differences in race mentality, but other than that it's all quite similar.
"It's all nuts and bolts and whoever works the hardest goes the fastest," he said.
"My job is to make sure the car hits the track clean and tidy in working order."
Working on sprintcars and tweaking them to their peak performance is his strength.
"I tried racing a little bit when I was younger, but that was it. I like being behind the scenes," he said.
Hickman has just wrapped up Speedweek, the first part of the World Series season.
The team had a strong fourth place finish at Murray Bridge on the second night, and sits in 12th position on the standings on 732 points.
The second part of the series, Sunshine Swing in Queensland starts January 4 at Archerfield Speedway.
