EAGLEHAWK ended its three-game slide by the barest of margins in a BBD pennant thriller against Golden Square on Saturday.
The Hawks were in danger of losing an ultra-rare fourth game in a row when they trailed Golden Square by one shot heading into the final end between Eaglehawk's Darren Burgess and Square's Daryl Cheeseman.
But Burgess was able to pick up two shots on the last end to propel the Hawks to a gripping 86-85 victory and open up a 16-point buffer on the fifth-placed Square at the mid-season break.
"We just had to get the 10 points today to give us that bit of a break," Hawks' skipper Dean Carter said.
"We knew it was going to be tough with Square having been in handy form. We'll now reassess where we're at over the break and work on what we need to do to get back to where we've been the past couple of years."
The Hawks were victorious despite having just one winning rink, with Burgess defeating Cheeseman 26-14.
There was a 26-all tie between the Hawks' Simon Carter and Square's Garri Conforti, while the Golden Square rinks of Steve Drummond (+3) and Trevor Schill (+8) were both up.
* South Bendigo continued its solid form, overcoming Kangaroo Flat by nine shots in the match of the round.
The 102-93 victory was South's fourth in a row and gives it a 15-point gap in second position at the break.
The match-up included a clash between former Bendigo East premiership skipper team-mates David Keenan (Flat) and Brad Holland (South).
Holland's rink proved too strong in winning 24-18.
The major surprise in the match was the hiding dished out by the South Bendigo rink of Luke Hoskin to the Flat's Barry Anset.
Anset had gone into the game with four wins in a row by double figures, but was on the end of a 36-18 belting.
* Castlemaine won its third game of the season, defeating Bendigo at home.
The Maine won 99-89, and in doing so leaped over Bendigo, which slipped to seventh after losing its fifth game in a row, all of which have been by at least 10 shots.
Castlemaine had three rinks up, while the damage would have been far worse for Bendigo had Andrew Brown's rink not won by 21.
* Just like their round one encounter Bendigo East collected all 18 points in a 114-74 belting of Inglewood spearheaded by big wins to coach Lee Schraner (+16), who has moved to No.1 in the skipper rankings, and Ian Ross (+14).
