Mr Kennedy will lead the editorial team of the Bendigo Advertiser and have oversight of the recently merged Bendigo Weekly and the popular Domain property guide.
He will also oversee ACM's titles in western Victoria, with the head of the Wimmera Mail-Times, Ararat Advertiser and Stawell Times-News editorial teams to report to him.
Mr Kennedy, a former Bendigo Advertiser editor, led the Bendigo Weekly for almost nine years until October's successful merger.
ACM Editorial Director Rod Quinn said Mr Kennedy was a highly experienced editor with deep connections to the Bendigo community.
"Peter has a reputation for producing great newspapers and I know he will deliver for our loyal local audiences," he said.
Mr Quinn paid tribute to outgoing Bendigo Advertiser editor Nicole Ferrie, and thanked her for her contribution to the newspaper over many years.
"Nicole has been a proud advocate for the community on many important issues," he said.
"She has my gratitude and the gratitude of her colleagues and readers for her dedication to quality local journalism."
Mr Kennedy said he looked forward to beginning in his new role on Monday.
"We have an excellent team and great products, and I'm committed to ensuring we continue to tell the stories of Bendigo with pride and passion," he said.
