GREENS Lake will be closed for a sixth consecutive year during the height of New Year's Eve festivities.
The lake, at Corop, will be closed from noon on December 30 until noon on January 1.
Goulburn-Murray Water's Warren Blyth said emergency services echoed community concerns for public safety.
"So it is our duty to close Greens Lake to avoid any tragedies occurring over the New Year's holiday period," he said.
Stanhope Leading Senior Constable Frank Scopelliti said the events leading up to the first lake closure in 2014 were such that it was only a matter of time before a life-threatening tragedy would occur.
"The actions of drug and alcohol-affected people can put their own and others' safety at risk," he said.
The lake will not be accessible for recreational activities and all personal belongings must be removed during the closure period.
