Having been the two clear standout sides last summer, East and the Hawks are again the early-season pace-setters, each with three wins and a washed out draw from the four rounds so far.
The rink of Bendigo East skipper Brad Marron is off to a flyer, already +35 shots, while team-mate Lee Schraner's rink is also unbeaten.
East has won 10 of its 12 rinks so far this season compared to the Hawks' eight.
The past three match-ups between the two rivals have all been wins to Bendigo East by single-figure margins, including 94-85 in last season's grand final.
In other round five games on Saturday, Castlemaine hosts Kangaroo Flat, Inglewood takes on South Bendigo and Golden Square clashes with Bendigo.
