Sandhurst premiership player Murphy showed his class by taking 3-15 off three overs with his off-spinners.
His spell helped restrict Metro to 130 all out, with Nick Sleeman (37) and Stephen Mihelakos (31) the best with the bat.
In reply, Vic Country lost wickets at regular intervals, but never looked like losing with Hammel at the crease.
Hammel hit nine fours and one six to guide Victoria Country home by three wickets with a ball to spare.
Former Sandhurst paceman Nick Gladman didn't play for Victoria Country in the T20 game.
Game two on Wednesday is a 50-over per side one-day match from 10am, with game three on Thursday a T20 clash from 10am.
The trial games are preparation for next month's national under-19 championships in Perth.
