More than 7000 people are expected to attend the 2019 Jayco Bendigo Cup on Wednesday.
But with the weather tipped to hit 35 degrees in the region, Sergeant Andrew Bowen said many more people would be out in force enjoying the warm day off.
"Public holidays are always a concern for police," Sergeant Bowen said. "There is increased traffic on the road and more people are consuming alcohol.
"Stay hydrated and look after your mates. But if you plan on drinking, don't drive."
It comes as the state's road death toll reaches more than 220 people, up from 171 people at the same time last year.
There have been 25 deaths on central Victorian roads alone, including a fatal crash in Marong on Tuesday.
