The property at 288 View Street, Bendigo was first built in 1872 by the Sandhurst Building Society.
The house, which has only had five different owners in its 147-year history, has just been put on the market for the first time in two decades.
"There are a lot of expensive homes being sold in Bendigo over recent years, but this home is probably the best house in Bendigo," DCK Real Estate agent Leonie Butler said.
"That's my opinion, but it's a very special property."
DCK Real Estate director Matt Bowles said only three residential properties in Bendigo have exceeded the $2 million mark in the past five years.
While more properties are being sold for more than $1 million in the suburb, Mr Bowles said properties like the one on View Street would still be a rare find.
"The thing about Bendigo is it's pretty affordable," he said. "The really grand homes will still get over $2 million but there are not too many being built."
