ESSENDON Football Club chaplain Mark Purser will be guest speaker at the Bendigo and regional Victorian annual sports chaplaincy dinner on October 23.

Purser, formerly the Adelaide Football Club chaplain, will address the issue of resilience in sport, with reference to the lessons learned from pastorally leading the Crows on a challenging journey through a pair of tragedies, including the death of coach of Phil Walsh, which powerfully impacted the club.
The dinner - at Bendigo Pottery - follows a busy few months for the Sports Chaplaincy Australia, says its Bendigo-based Victorian co-ordinator Bruce Claridge.
"We at Sports Chaplaincy Australia in this region have been involved with many pastoral care roles with clubs in our area. Sadly there have been too many," he said.
"From grief debriefs to individual pastoral care needs of players and club members there have been hours and hours of voluntary work done by sports chaplains.
"We are supported only by generous grants, donations and some associations and leagues, who levy player registrations with a small amount to assist SCA.
"The annual dinner is our only showcase of the work done in sporting clubs and an opportunity for people to support our role."
Purser will be joined by fellow guest speakers SCA national director Michael Pailthorpe and Maryborough footballer Ashley Humphrey, who will share stories of pastoral support.
Tickets for the chaplaincy dinner, which includes a two-course smorgasbord dinner, are $45. Tables of 10 are available for $400.
